Welcome to the Exploratory Space: Where Design Meets Ability

Hey there! I’m Taylor Adapt, and this blog, Design for Ability: Beyond the Obvious, really started from a simple thought: How much easier would life be if design just……got it!

Working as a Special Education teacher, I’ve thought more about how design shapes our everyday life. Think about how a comfy chair can change your whole afternoon, or how a well-lit room just feels right. But for many, especially those living with physical challenges, these ‘simple’ things can be a huge task. Therefore, I beg the question: How can we think of smart ways to bridge the gap?

Here, we dig into all of it. Topics range from how colors make you feel, why quiet spaces matter, and how a kitchen can truly work for every hand that uses it. We also explore what’s new with mobility and how technology plays a part. This series of blogs is about seeing the world through a lens of possibility, and always asking: How can design help us live better?

The most important part about this series is that you are welcome, in fact, I encourage you to share your thoughts and experiences. What’s one small change that would make a big difference in your day?  Your experiences are the real gold here, helping to understand another world and see ‘beyond the obvious’.

Thanks for being here. Let’s explore!
